How to Compress a PDF to 200 KB (or Any Exact Size)
Here's the frustrating loop: the portal says 'maximum 200 KB', your scanned document is 2.4 MB, you run it through a compressor, it comes back at 480 KB, the portal rejects it again. Ordinary compressors apply a fixed quality preset and give you whatever size falls out. Portals don't grade effort — 201 KB fails.
Hitting a byte target requires a different approach: compress, measure, adjust, repeat, until the file fits — the highest quality that stays under the limit. Doing that manually means a dozen export-check-retry rounds. The right tool automates the search and shows you the achieved size before you download, so the first upload is the last one.
Step by step
- Open the compress tool with your target — 200 KB is preset on the linked page; any other number works too.
- Drop in your PDF. The tool samples pages at several resolutions and finds the best quality that fits your 200 KB budget.

Questions
Why does text become non-selectable after compression?
Guaranteed-size compression re-renders pages as images — that's what makes the byte math controllable. The document reads and prints identically; text selection is the trade. For portals, which want a document under a cap, this is the right trade.
What if 200 KB is impossible for my file?
Very long documents can't fit at readable quality, and the honest answer is to split them. The tool tells you explicitly when the target wasn't reachable instead of silently giving you a failed file.
