How to Resize a Photo to 20–50 KB for SSC, IBPS and Other Exams
Exam portals check three things about your photograph, all mechanically: the format (JPEG), the pixel dimensions (IBPS wants exactly 200 × 230), and the file size (between 20 and 50 KB — under 20 fails just like over 50). A photo can look perfect and fail all three.
The trap most applicants hit is the minimum: phone photos resized down to 200 pixels compress to 10–15 KB, below the 20 KB floor, and the portal's error message rarely explains that. Here's the full procedure that handles the maximum and the minimum.
Step by step
- Take a straight-on photo against a plain, light background with some space around your face — the portal's proportions differ from your camera's, and the crop is centred.
- Open the photo resizer and pick your portal's preset (SSC, IBPS, SBI, UPSC and others are built in) — it fills in the exact pixels and KB window from the notification.
- Run the resize. The tool searches JPEG quality until the file lands inside the window, and if it comes out under the minimum, it pads the file with inert metadata until it clears the floor — the image itself is untouched.
- Check the preview: that's exactly what the portal will receive and print on your admit card.
- Download the JPEG and, if you want certainty, run it through the validator on your portal's preset page before uploading.
Tips that save a retry
- If the portal requires your name and photo date printed on the image (UPSC, NEET do), add that before resizing.
- Even lighting compresses better than shadows — you get more visible quality inside the same KB budget.
- Save the compliant photo somewhere safe; most portals ask for the same file again at later stages.

Why does the portal reject files under the minimum size?
Portals set a floor to filter out unusably low-quality images. Ironically, modern compression is so good that legitimate photos often land below it — which is why padding to the floor is a necessary feature, not a hack. The visible image is unchanged.
Are the presets guaranteed current?
Each preset shows its last-verified date, and specs are updated when notifications change — but the current official notification always wins. Check it for your cycle.
